There could be many reasons why someone may wish to find replacement windows for their home. Some are just very old, and don't work well anymore, while others that were built in earlier times are not efficient for keeping the heat in during winter and out during the summer. A window made from wood or any other material may also have leaks from wear and tear, damages or old age. Getting completely new sets installed can be expensive, but it will increase the home's value as well as the comfort of the home.

The first thing to consider when planning to replace your windows is the style. But being very specific about the style may be costly since this may require a custom made window as per your desires. The super modern ones may also not be available to you if the job is small scale. This is because most of the American types are traditionally styles and manufacturers don't focus on the small market of the modern window.

The modern windows however are available if you go to a specialty supplier. Whatever you want will be made but you have to pay through the nose for this. It is good to note that over-customizing the window will leave you with very limited flexibility for the overall house color and design.

The material for the window comes in next as you choose the window. The least expensive is vinyl, most replacement windows are done in this material. The look however may not appeal to many, the color is only white. This material is not environmentally friendly and cannot be painted in your favorite color. Given the low price, it is the best option for many homeowners since no one wants to put in lots of money to replace a window. It has low maintenance and good insulation characteristics compared to the rest.

Aluminum is another choice. The quality of an aluminum window can vary, and its prices vary considerably as well. Modern lofts often have high quality, expensive aluminum sets which look very nice. Although attractive, they do have some condensation problems which may damage a wooden or iron window frame.

Along with the disadvantages, however, aluminum types have their advantages as well. Their appealing aspects include their capacity for recycling, and they require less maintenance. Their prices can be affordable as well. For some older homes, however, aluminum cannot be used.

Wood is another favorite material to use, but it has a greater demand in relation to maintenance. Wood has the tendency to rot quite easily when it is not properly looked after, therefore the homeowner will need to strain and paint it on a regular basis. Wood is also not favorable for modern houses, but has a more appealing look with traditional houses. Lately, more people have also been enclosing the wood with aluminum or vinyl so that less painting etc. Is required.

The most recent development is the fiberglass. Replacement windows made of this material are strong, have impressive insulation properties and require low maintenance. It does not rot, less expensive than wood and can be painted.
