Living room design involves the aspects of functionality and decorativeness. As far as decorativeness is concerned, the major factor for consideration is the creation of a room that is visually appealing.

The elements needing attention in the functional aspect of a living room design include the comfort of the space, furniture layout and traffic patterns. Not to be forgotten as a functional element is having the right spaces and furniture for all room activities including entertaining.

The functionality of a living room design lies mainly on the determination of what the living room will be used for. Living rooms are normally used for entertaining, executing family games, reading and television watching.

The number of guests to be entertained is an important factor in the insurance of having enough seating and space in a living room design. The living room can also be turned into a cozy retreat area for family members during the times when there are no entertaining activities.

The living room design can only be correctly completed when the activities to be done in the living room has been determined. It is only then that the assurance of having enough room and furniture for each and every living room activity can be ascertained.

Traditional decorating ideas and furniture layout may not work in the living room with an awkward or unusual shape. Small living room design will definitely be insufficient for very large living rooms.

While the use of large and over-sized pieces is a given for large living rooms, the use of smaller scale furniture pieces is a feature of a small living room design. Other features for small living rooms include the modification of furniture as well as the selection of unconventional pieces.

The positioning of the pieces so that the room appears uncluttered is essential to small living room design. Likewise, the space must remain easy to navigate in at all times. There must also be conversation areas created in the room.

To ensure that people can talk to one another easily, the small living room design must group sofas and chairs together. Furthermore, people must be able to walk around the set conversation areas and not through them.

Another aspect of small living room design is finding a focal point to the space. A window or fireplace can be architectural features that can act as focal points. A large piece of furniture, an art or wall hanging can be the focal point in living rooms without built-in features.
