One of the documents that are always being accessed or requested is marriage records. The marriage records of Illinois, also called by many as IL marriage records, are opened to the public. It was after the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act that people started to request for such document regularly.

Marriage records in Illinois have many uses. Genealogy is one of the top reasons for accessing marriage records in the state of Illinois. It has information that is vital in updating the family records. Another important use of such document is for government transactions. Transactions such as insurance and property declaration are one of the transactions that would call for a copy of a marriage certificate. Other processes in the government that would require proof of identity and status can use marriage certificate as an official document. In a rather unusual way, such document is also used when conducting a background check especially on the marital status of an individual. This is mostly done by people who wish to check the marital status of their partners.

One would find a lot of information from a copy of a marriage certificate. The complete names of the couple are indicated on the document together with important details of the marriage such as where and when the marriage took place. Additional information that is included on the document is the names of the witnesses as well as the names of parents of the couple.

The state office in Illinois only releases documents which have been registered since January 1962. A $5 processing fee has to be paid in order for the request to be granted and to proceed with the search. The one who requested the document has to indicate the basic information of the file that is being requested as well as their contact details on the request form. One should also indicate their relation to the name on the file since the document is only given to the bride or the groom and their immediate families. One should give the office 10 business days to process the said request.

The marriage records of Illinois are archived at the Department of Health of the state. But the said office is not responsible for releasing copies of the said file. The office can only help in verifying the needed information. One has to go to the county clerk office where the marriage was registered. Requests can be prioritized if it was sent by mail since the staff also has other tasks that they may overlook undocumented requests.

The state of Illinois has utilized the development of the Internet in delivering information to the general public. With this, marriage records can now be obtained online. This means that the residents of the state can now easily obtain the said document anytime and anywhere. This has eliminated the need to go to any government office in order to request for the certificate since it can be done at the comforts of your own home. Waiting is also eliminated since the requested information can be delivered in just seconds instead of days.
